Abstract

Expatriation or overseas assignments are key personnel strategies used by multinational companies to fill managerial positions for the sustainability and continuity of the organization. Furthermore, individuals involved in overseas assignments, especially expatriates, tend to experience difficulties in adapting to the cultural environment of the host country due to cultural practices that differ from their home country. Working in a foreign country is very stressful, full of pressure, and many expatriates fail. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to explore and gain deeper insights into the cultural adaptation strategies and self-adjustment of expatriates in the host country. A qualitative approach using literature review methods with secondary data from various relevant sources will be employed to provide an overview and guidelines for expatriates to enhance their practices and performance effectiveness in the host country. The main determining factors for successful adaptation and adjustment are that expatriates must prepare themselves before departure, have the motivation and willingness to learn about the host country's culture and language, adjust their behavior to the new environment and culture, and the importance of company involvement in providing cross-cultural training for the expatriate's assignment location. Future research should consider using quantitative methods with large samples to identify and analyze the inhibiting factors and challenges faced by expatriates in the host country.
